BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team split the final day of the 2022 regular season with a 9-6 loss to Howard Payne and an 11-4 win over the Yellow Jackets. UMHB improved to 23-17 on the season and 16-15 in American Southwest Conference action while the Yellow Jackets moved to 11-29 overall and 7-23 in league play.
Howard Payne jumped to an early lead with a pair of runs in the first but the Cru responded, scoring two off RBI from
Warren Sammons and
Hunter Jones. The second inning played scoreless but Howard Payne's offense came alive in the third, scoring seven runs nine hits for a 9-2 lead over the Cru. UMHB added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth off a two-RBI single from
Kaden deBerardinis.
Hunter Jones followed that with a two-RBI home run in the bottom of the seventh, scoring
Caimyn Holiday. UMHB did not score again, falling 9-6 to the Yellow Jackets.
Jones led the Cru with two hits and three RBI while Holiday scored a pair of runs.
Andrew Acierni took the loss for the Cru, throwing 2.1 innings with six runs allowed. Landin Blass earned the win for Howard Payne. Blass threw a complete seven-inning game with six runs and seven hits allowed.
UMHB took a lead in the second game, scoring six runs in the bottom of the third.
Kaden deBerardinis hit in
Rhett Grosz with a sacrifice fly to centerfield before
Jacob Dellipoali scored on an RBI single from Holiday. UMHB hit three consecutive RBI singles after that, ending the inning with a 6-0 lead. The Cru added two more runs in the bottom of the next frame on a two-RBI single from Holiday, putting UMHB up by eight.
Ryan Farmer scored one more run for the Cru in the bottom of the fifth before the Yellow Jackets put up three in the top of the sixth to cut the lead. The Cru added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Robert McCall opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk from Farmer.
Carson Hagan hit in both baserunners in the next at-bat, slamming an RBI single for an 11-3 Cru lead. Howard Payne added a solo-run in the top of the eighth but UMHB held on for the 11-4 win.
Holiday and Hagan led the Cru with three hits and three RBI each while McCall, Farmer and Grosz each scored a team-high two runs.
Rahul Champaneri earned the win on the mound, throwing five innings with two hits allowed. UMHB totaled 11 runs on 14 hits with one error while the Yellow Jackets had four runs on nine hits with one error.
