Baseball drops Friday night game to LeTourneau

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team fell victim to a seventh-inning rally, falling 5-1 to LeTourneau University Friday evening in Belton.

Bryce Farlander opened the game on the mound with a scoreless first inning. LeTourneau scored the go-ahead run in the top of the second, reaching on a double-play groundout from Lane Williams. UMHB responded with a solo run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hayden Guerin opened that frame with a triple before Rhett Grosz hit him in with an RBI single. LeTourneau had two hard hits in the sixth inning but a pair of impressive outfield catches from Tyler Betts and Kaden deBerardinis left them scoreless. LeTourneau got back on top in the seventh inning with a trio of runs, scoring on a fielder's choice, a passed ball and an RBI single to take the 4-1 lead.

UMHB had a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning but wasn't able to bring the runner around. The YellowJackets had a runner on second in the top of the eighth but a strikeout and caught-stealing eliminated that threat. LeTourneau put up a single-run inning in the ninth to seal the 5-1 win.

deBerardinis and Grosz led the Cru with two hits each while four other Crusaders added one. Grosz also recorded the Cru's lone RBI while Guerin reached home. Bryce Farlander threw four opening innings with three hits and two strikeouts. Alex Palczewski pitched two in relief, giving up three runs on one hit while Nicklas Fenner allowed just one hit in his two-inning outing. Jacob Haynes was UMHB's closer, throwing one inning with one run and one hit allowed. UMHB totaled one run on eight hits with one error while the Yellow Jackets had five runs on six hits with no errors.

UMHB returns to action tomorrow in a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the YellowJackets at Red Murff Field in Belton.
