LONGVIEW, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team split a Friday doubleheader with LeTourneau University, falling 6-5 in extra innings before closing the series with a 13-6 win. UMHB moved to 17-8 overall and 9-6 in league play while the YellowJackets went to 11-14 overall and 5-7 in ASC action.
LeTourneau took a lead in the second inning, scoring Blake Vice on a sacrifice fly from Ethan Wood. UMHB responded quickly with back-to-back RBI doubles from
Carson Hagan and
Rhett Grosz. The YellowJackets answered again with a third-inning home run, scoring two runs for a 3-2 lead.
The Cru got back on top with an RBI single from
Kyle Hogwood in the fifth inning but the YellowJackets knotted it again in the sixth.
Kaden deBerardinis put the Cru back on top in the seventh, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Hagan. LeTourneau evened the game again in the bottom of the frame and then earned the walk off 6-5 win in the eighth.
Hagan and deBerardinis led the Cru with two hits each while Hagan and Hogwood each recorded two RBI. UMHB threw a trio of pitchers in the contest with
Nicklas Fenner taking the loss. UMHB totaled five runs on six hits with one error while the YellowJackets had six runs on 10 hits.
UMHB came out hot in game two, scoring three first-inning runs.
Kaden deBerardinis scored on an error before
Kyle Hogwood hit in
Ryan Farmer with an RBI single. UMHB added one more run in the frame when Hogwood scored off a single from
Elijah Rodriguez.
LeTourneau added one first-inning run but the Cru responded, putting up two more runs in the second.
Ryan Farmer hit a solo home run to left field before
Carson Hagan scored on an error for a 5-1 Cru lead. UMHB put up two more runs in the third with Rodriguez scored on an error and
Chris Perez reaching on a sacrifice bunt from deBerardinis.
Rhett Grosz scored on an error in the top of the fourth inning before the YellowJackets responded with a duo of runs to cut the gap to six. deBerardinis added another run in the fifth, hitting in
Easton Cline with a sacrifice fly before LeTourneau hit another solo home run to cut the gap to five. Perez answered in the sixth, scoring Hogwood with a sacrifice fly before deBerardinis hit in both Cline and
Jayden Chatman with a double to left field. LeTourneau added one more run in the seventh but UMHB walked away with the 13-6 victory.
Rodriguez led the Cru with three hits while Chatman added two. Hogwood was the run leader with three, followed by
Easton Cline with two. deBerardinis led all athletes with four RBI.
Keegan Symons earned the win on the mound, throwing four innings with five hits and three runs allowed. UMHB pitched a trio of relievers, giving up three total runs. UMHB had 13 runs on 11 hits with three errors while the YellowJackets had six runs on 12 hits with six errors.
UMHB returns to action in the annual Crush Cancer game against Southwestern University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2
nd. The game will feature ceremonial first pitches and a special seventh-inning ceremony. T-shirts are also on sale benefitting Addi's Faith Foundation.
