Baseball defeats No. 17 Trinity on the road

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team defeated No. 17 Trinity University (Texas) 6-3 Tuesday night in San Antonio. The Cru improved to 10-1 on the season while the Tigers fell to 5-3 overall.

UMHB got action started early with a single to left field followed by a steal to put Cameron Talburt in scoring position. Carson Hagan gave the Cru a 1-0 lead in the first frame with an RBI single to drive in Talburt. UMHB finished the first two innings strong with Quint Mullen on the mound for a duo of perfect innings.

Talburt and Hagan both got on base with singles again in the third inning before a Rhett Grosz sacrifice flyout scored Talburt for the two-run lead. Erick Roberts took the mound in the bottom of the third, leading the Cru to a three-up, three-down frame.

UMHB continued scoring in the fourth inning on a Blake Gonzalez single to bring home Easton Cline while Carson Riley also scored during the play on a throwing error to go up 4-0. Gonzalez proceeded to extend the margin to five on the next at-bat, scoring on a groundout.

Trinity put its first runners on base in the bottom of the fourth, but a double-play followed by a flyout to left field helped the Cru escape unscathed. UMHB added another perfect inning in the fifth, highlighted by back-to-back strikeouts from Mason Semmelman.

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth after a duo of free bases allowed for a run from Cam Champness on an error. Trinity's Jack Peterson added a second run on an error before the Tigers recorded their first hit of the night, scoring Mattias Rytting to cut the gap 5-3.

UMHB held the Tigers through the seventh with a pair of strikeouts from Cameron Bogan. The Cru brought their lead to 6-3 in the top of the eighth inning with a Kaden deBerardinis run on an Exavier Mendez RBI. UMHB kept the lead through the final two innings to claim the 6-3 road win.

Erick Roberts earned the win for the Cru while Nicklas Fenner received the save. Quint Mullen, Mason Semmelman and Cameron Bogan also made mound appearances for UMHB. The Cru pitching staff held the Tigers to just two hits with no earned runs. UMHB recorded ten hits in the contest, led by Talburt with three.

UMHB returns to action on March 8th in a 6:00 p.m. contest against Schreiner University in Belton.
