Baseball completes sweep with two wins over Schreiner

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team completed a three-game sweep over Schreiner University with a pair of wins Saturday in Belton. UMHB opened the day with a 6-5 win before earning a 9-4 win to complete the sweep. 

UMHB opened the first game with a trio of runs to take an early lead. Kaden deBerardinis hit a single before Cameron Talburt scored him with a double. Talburt scored on the next at-bat, reaching on a single from Carson Hagan before Hagan scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Exavier Mendez.

Schreiner responded in the top of the next frame, scoring a pair of runs off a RBI double from Seth Joseph and a single from Aidan Warren. Schreiner evened the contest with a solo home run in the third and took a 4-3 lead off a stolen base in the fourth.

Rhett Grosz put the Cru back on top in the fifth inning, scoring Hagan and deBerardinis off a single up the middle. Schreiner scored the equalizer in the sixth but Weston Dean responded, hitting the game-winning RBI single up the middle and scoring Riley Bender for the 6-5 Cru win. 

deBerardinis led the Cru with three hits while Talburt, Hagan and Bender each added two. Grosz led the Cru with two RBI while Hagan and deBerardinis both scored a team-high two runs. 

Quint Mullen earned the win on the mound for the Cru, throwing two innings with two hits and one run allowed. Rahul Champaneri started the game on the mound for UMHB. Champaneri put in five innings of work with two earned runs allowed. The Cru pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts with just one walk. 

Schreiner took the early lead in game two, scoring Gerardo Cardoza off an RBI double from Joseph DiCarlo. UMHB responded with a solo run in the bottom of that frame, scoring deBerardinis off a single to left field from Rhett Grosz

The knot held until the third inning when UMHB added two more runs for the Cru's first lead of the game. deBerardinis opened the inning with a single before stealing second. Grosz again scored deBerardinis with an RBI single before Weston Dean hit in Talburt with a double, putting the Cru on top 3-1. 

UMHB added one more run in the fifth off an RBI from Carson Hagan and extended the lead again in the sixth off an RBI double from Warren Sammons. Talburt tacked on one more run in the sixth with an RBI single to score Sammons. The Cru added three more runs in the seventh to go ahead 9-1. Weston Dean hit in Hagan with an RBI single up the middle before Mendez doubled to score Dean. Ryan Farmer scored the final run of the frame on an error. 

The Mountaineers added a trio of runs in the top of the eighth inning but UMHB thwarted the offensive threat to secure the 9-4 win. 

deBerardinis led the Cru with four hits while Hagan, Grosz, Dean and Bender each added two UMHB totaled nine runs on 15 hits with Grosz and Dean each recording a team-high two RBI. 

UMHB used a band of pitches in the contest with starter Keegan Symons earning the win. Symons threw six innings with one run allowed, striking out six batters. 

UMHB returns to action on Wednesday, March 13th in a 2:30 p.m. contest against Whittier College at Red Murff Field in Belton.
