Baseball splits doubleheader with Ozarks

BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Ozarks Friday evening in Belton. The Cru moved to 21-13 on the season and 13-10 in American Southwest Conference action while the Eagles moved to 15-19 and 9-11 in ASC play.

UMHB was first to score in game one with a groundout from Elijah Rodriguez to drive in Rhett Grosz in the bottom of the second. The Cru added one more in the frame on a Chris Perez sacrifice flyout to score Jayden Chatman. UMHB followed that with a three-up, three-down top of the third with James McGlumphy on the mound.

The Eagles cut the margin to one in the top of the fourth on an RBI single. Ozarks hit a duo of singles in the seventh inning before scoring the tying run on an error. The Eagles continued pressing with loaded bases, but the Cru used an unassisted out at third to close the frame. Ozarks used a perfect bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

UMHB held Ozarks through the top of the eighth without allowing a base runner. The Cru got action started in the bottom of the inning with a hit by pitch and a walk. Carson Hagan followed with a single before Grosz singled to bring in Drake Herrera for the walk-off 3-2 win.

McGlumphy started on the mound for UMHB, throwing 6.1 innings with one earned run on eight hits with three strikeouts. Nicklas Fenner (2-2) earned the win for the Cru, pitching the final 1.2 innings with no hits allowed. UMHB recorded six hits, each from a different athlete.

The Eagles got action started early in game two, scoring on an error followed by an RBI double to go ahead 2-0 in the first frame. UMHB cut the gap to one in the sixth on an RBI single from Grosz to score Tyler Betts. Ozarks responded in the top of the seventh with three runs to extend their lead for the 5-1 win.

Rahul Champaneri took the loss for UMHB, pitching the first six innings with two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Quint Mullen and Mason Semmelmann also made mound appearances for the Cru. UMHB recorded two hits in game two.

UMHB will return to action Saturday, April 19th at noon to close the three-game series against University of the Ozarks in Belton.
