ALPINE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team split a Friday doubleheader with Sul Ross State University, falling 4-1 before earning an extra-inning 8-7 win in Alpine. UMHB improved to 23-15 on the day while the Lobos moved to 10-28.
The first game played scoreless until the fourth inning when
Tyler Betts scored on an error. The Lobos responded with two runs in the bottom of that frame, taking a 2-1 lead. Sul Ross State added single run frames in the fifth and sixth inning to secure the 4-1 win.
Cameron Talburt led the Cru with two hits while four other Crusaders each added one. Betts was the lone scoring runner for UMHB.
James McGlumphy threw three innings on the mound, giving up two hits with three batters struck out.
Nicklas Fenner followed that with two innings of work, giving up three runs on five hits while
Mason Semmelmann pitched in relief, throwing one inning with two hits and one run allowed.
Sul Ross opened game two with a single run third-inning before UMHB responded with a solo home run from
Riley Bender in the fourth.
Carson Riley kicked off the fifth inning with another solo home run for the Cru before
Blake Gonzalez scored on an RBI from Bender for a 3-1 lead.
The Lobos quickly evened the contest, scoring two runs on an error before
Chris Perez hit in Kaden Deberardinis to kickstart a four-run sixth inning. Perez scored on an RBI from
Blake Gonzalez before
Cameron Talburt hit in Riley with a double to second base.
Cameron Talburt ended scoring with a run on a passed ball to put UMHB up by four. Sul Ross scored a pair of runs in the sixth and eighth innings to knot the contest at 7. Neither team scored in the ninth, sending the contest into extra innings.
deBerardinis opened the top of the 10
th with a double to left field then advanced on a sac bunt from
Chris Perez. deBerardinis scored one batter later off a bunt from
Carson Riley to put the Cru ahead by one.
Jacob Haynes pitched the final inning for UMHB, forcing a double play and a fly out to secure the 8-7 win.
Haynes threw 2.2 shutout innings with one hit allowed. UMHB threw six pitchers in the contest with
Quint Mullen,
Reid Cromie and Haynes all giving up zero earned runs. Talburt, Bender and deBerardinis all led the Cru with two hits as UMHB totaled 11 in the contest. Riley and deBerardinis each recorded two runs while Bender and Riley led the Cru with two RBI each.
UMHB closes the regular season in a 1 p.m. single game on Saturday at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
