BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team shut out Hardin-Simmons University 13-0 Friday night in Belton. The Cru improved to 18-9 overall and 10-6 in American Southwest Conference action while the Cowboys fell to 10-16 on the season and 5-8 in ASC play.
UMHB opened the contest with a three-up, three-down first inning from James McGlumphy before Ryan Farmer sent the ball over the left field wall for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of that frame. McGlumphy continued in the second with another perfect inning, including back-to-back strikeouts to close the inning.
The Cru expanded the gap to five with a grand slam from Kyle Hogwood in the third, scoring Kaden deBerardinis, Farmer and Carson Hagan. UMHB added two more three-batter innings in the fourth and fifth, highlighted by a flyout double play from deBerardinis and Chris Perez.
UMHB continued scoring in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Hogwood to score Rhett Grosz before Jayden Chatman singled to right to drive in Hogwood and put the Cru up by seven.
UMHB added six more insurance runs in the sixth inning. Farmer hit an RBI double to left field to score Jordan Fernandez, followed by a Hagan single to bring Farmer home. Hagan stole all around the bases to score the tenth run before Hogwood recorded his second home run of the night, bringing home Grosz to go up 12-0. Jordan Fernandez hit an RBI single to score Elijah Rodriguez for the final run of the night. UMHB held the Cowboys to just one hit in the final three frames to secure the 13-0 win.
"You don't get the job done yourself," Hogwood said. "We've got about ... eight other guys in the lineup that are there for ya. It's our job to pick each other up."
James McGlumphy (4-2) earned the win for UMHB, pitching seven innings with just three hits and eight strikeouts. Bryce Farlander and Reid Cromie each threw for an inning and did not allow a hit. The Cru recorded 19 hits on the night led by Hogwood with three hits and seven RBI.
UMHB returns to action Saturday, April 6th in a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader to finish the three-game series against the Cowboys in Belton.
