GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split a Friday doubleheader with Southwestern University, earning a 9-7 win in game one before falling 7-5 in game two. UMHB moved to 2-4 on the season while the Pirates sit at 3-3.
Ava Perlinger opened game one with a home run to right field, followed by a two-RBI double from
Jordan Iverson for a 3-0 UMHB lead in the first. The Pirates answered with a pair of second-inning runs but a
Macy Alewine home run scored two more to put the Cru back up by three.
Southwestern answered with a solo shot in the third, knotting the game at three. UMHB put up two-run innings in the fifth and sixth to take a 9-3 lead.
Angelina Rodriguez and Alewine both drove in runs in the fifth off a double and a single, respectively, while
Shorey Nguyen's two-RBI double brought a pair of runs across in the sixth.
The Pirates fought back in the seventh, scoring four runs but
Beth Ann Johnston shut it down, securing the 9-7 win for the Cru.
Nguyen and Alewine each recorded a team-high two hits while Alewine led with three RBI. Johnston earned the win in the circle, pitching four innings with seven hits and three runs allowed. UMHB totaled nine runs on 10 hits with two errors while the Pirates had seven runs on 15 hits with one error.
UMHB opened game two with another early lead, scoring off a sacrifice fly from
Addy Todd.
Ava Jolley scored on an error in the third inning for a 2-0 lead but the Pirates answered with a trio of third-inning runs to take their first lead of the series. Todd responded for the Cru in the fifth, hitting a solo home run to left field knotting the game at three runs each.
Southwestern got back on top with a run in the fifth but Nguyen and Todd answered in the sixth with back-to-back extra-base hits scoring two runs for a 5-4 lead. Southwestern answered again, scoring three runs in the bottom of that frame and holding off the Cru for the 7-5 win.
Todd led the Cru with three hits and three RBI while Alewine added three hits and Nguyen scored two runs.
Katherine Neal pitched five innings, striking out six batters while
Ella Gamblin put in one inning of work with one strikeout. UMHB totaled five runs on 11 hits with four errors while the Pirates had seven runs on eight hits with two errors.
UMHB returns to action Monday, February 23
rd in a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Hanover College at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
