BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team earned a 9-3 win against Schreiner University Tuesday evening at Red Murff Field. This win improves UMHB's record to 4-3 on the season while the Mountaineers fall to 3-4.
The Mountaineers struck first in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on one hit. Jesse Hemmerling added a double in the second inning, but the Cru remained scoreless through three innings. Schreiner put a run on the board in the fourth and fifth innings to extend the Mountaineers' lead 3-0. Cameron Talburt responded in the bottom of the fifth with a single to left, moving around the bases and scoring on three wild pitches.
Braden Fuentes led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a homerun on the first pitch he faced, moving the score to 3-2. UMHB then took the 4-3 lead when Riley Bender hit a bases-loaded double to score Braden Fuentes and Jesse Hemmerling. The Cru had another three-run inning in the seventh, with a Jasson Hemmerling Jr. RBI single, along with a Mountaineer error to score Jesse Hemmerling and Easton Cline, extending UMHB's lead 7-3. Jasson Hemmerling Jr. sealed the 9-3 victory with a two-RBI single to score John Van Huis and Riley Bender.
Jasson Hemmerling Jr. went two for four with three RBI on the night, followed by Easton Cline, who had two hits in four plate appearances with two runs scored. Ryland Anders earned the win on the mound, pitching three complete innings with three strikeouts and no hits.
UMHB returns to action in Georgetown on Friday, February 20th, in a 6:00pm contest against Southwestern University.
