MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dropped a pair of contests to No. 16 Huntingdon College Saturday in Memphis.
Huntingdon took an early lead, scoring three first-inning runs. UMHB put runners on in the second and fifth innings but couldn't bring anyone around until the sixth frame.
Shorey Nguyen singled then advanced on a sacrifice fly from
Brielle Moreland.
Ryleigh Mills followed with a single to centerfield, scoring Nguyen. The Hawks tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-1 lead. UMHB put a runner on in the seventh but a double play ended the game, giving the Cru a four-run loss.
Four different Crusaders recorded hits while Nguyen scored the Cru's lone run and Mills had the RBI.
Madelyn Denn took the loss in the circle, throwing 5.1 innings with 11 hits and five runs allowed.
UMHB totaled one run on four hits with one error while the Hawks had five runs on 11 hits with no errors.
The Hawks opened game two with eight first-inning runs.
Shorey Nguyen scored on an RBI from
Macy Alewine in the bottom of the second then tacked on another run in the fourth off an Alewine home run. UMHB's defense held the Hawks scoreless for three innings, giving up a pair of fifth-inning runs to extend the gap 10-2.
UMHB's offense rallied in the fifth, scoring five runs. Nguyen scored on an Alewine single before Alewine crossed on a bases-loaded walk earned by
Jordan Iverson.
Bralyn Belk followed with a single to score
Brielle Moreland before
Ava Perlinger hit in
Sabrina Morgan with a single. Iverson was the final Crusader to reach, scoring on an RBI from
Riley Marek. UMHB put a runner on in the sixth but wasn't able to capitalize, falling 10-7 to the Hawks.
Four different Crusaders recorded two hits each while Nguyen and Alewine tallied a team-high two runs each. Alewine led the Cru with three RBI while four other Crusaders added one.
Chloe Booth started in the circle, giving up five runs on four hits.
Ella Gamblin threw 4.2 innings in relief, giving up five runs on seven hits while
Katherine Neal finished the game with 2.1 shutout innings.
UMHB totaled seven runs on 11 hits with four errors while the Hawks had 10 runs on 12 hits with one error.
The Cru returns to action on Tuesday, March 3
rd in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at McMurry University in Abilene.
