KERRVILLE, Texas — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team earned a 7-3 decision over Schreiner University on Tuesday afternoon. This win improves the Cru's record to 13-5 on the season, while the Mountaineers fall to 6-11.
After five scoreless innings, the Mountaineers got on the board first in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on two hits. The Cru responded in the next frame when
Austin Birkhoff drew a four-pitch walk, advancing on a
Tyler Martin single. Birkhoff then scored on a Schreiner error to cut the Mountaineers' lead in half.
Schreiner added one more in the seventh, but UMHB answered in the top of the eighth after free bases for
Taylor McDaniel and
Jacob Newland resulted in two runs off a Birkhoff double, giving the Cru a 4-3 lead.
Cameron Talburt extended the lead with an RBI double, later scoring on a single from
Easton Cline to move the score to 6-3. The Cru added one more in the ninth when
Nolan Williams opened with a double to center, scoring on a Jasson Hemmerling single, securing UMHB's 7-3 victory.
Easton Cline went three for four with an RBI and a stolen base.
Tyler Martin also tallied three hits in four at-bats with a double and stolen base, while
Austin Birkhoff went two for three with two runs scored and an RBI.
Cole Morkovsky opened the game on the mound, throwing six complete innings with three strikeouts.
Ryland Anders earned the win for the Cru giving up just one hit.
UMHB returns to action at Red Murff Field on Friday, March 13
th at 6:00pm to begin a three-game home stretch against the University of La Verne.
