Softball splits doubleheader with Bethel

BELTON, Texas – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball split a doubleheader with Bethel University Tuesday in Belton. The Cru earned a 6-2 game-one win before falling 3-2 in the second contest. UMHB evened at 11-11 on the season while the Royals went to 3-7.
 
UMHB took a four-run lead in the second inning of game one. Jordan Iverson singled, before a double from Bralyn Belk and a walk from Ava Perlinger loaded the bases. Addy Todd put the ball in play in her at-bat, plating Jordan Iverson and Belk on a throwing error. Ryleigh Mills followed that with a single to shallow left field, scoring Perlinger and Todd for a 4-0 lead.
 
The Cru added a single-run frame in the third off an RBI from Bralyn Belk. The Royals threatened in the fifth, loading the bases but Johnston pitched around the jam, preserving the shutout. Shorey Nguyen scored Ava Perlinger in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single for a six-run margin. Bethel got on the board in the top of the seventh, scoring a pair of runs but UMHB got out of the inning with no more damage, ending the contest in a 6-2 Cru win.
 
Ryleigh Mills led the Cru with two hits while four other Crusaders each added one. Mills also led with two RBI while Perlinger scored a team-high two runs.
 
Beth Ann Johnston earned the win for the Cru, throwing 5.2 innings with three strikeouts and just four hits allowed. Katherine Neal threw in relief, giving up two runs on 1.1 innings of work. UMHB had six runs on six hits while the Royals had two runs on eight hits with three errors.
 
UMHB took a lead in game two, scoring Ava Jolley on an RBI double from Macy Alewine. The Cru held that lead until the top of the fifth inning when the Royals plated one run. Ryleigh Mills responded for the Cru, scoring Shorey Nguyen who reached on a single to put the Cru back on top.
 
The Royals answered in the sixth, scoring two runs on an error to take their first lead of the day. UMHB put runners on in the sixth but the Royals got out of it, going into the seventh still on top. The Cru threatened but wasn't able to score, ending the game in a 3-2 Bethel win.
 
Shorey Nguyen led the Cru with two hits while two Crusaders scored runs and Mills had the lone RBI. Ella Gamblin earned the start in the circle, throwing 4.2 innings with four hits and one run allowed. Chloe Booth took the loss, giving up two unearned runs with one hit in 2.1 innings. UMHB totaled two runs on six hits with one error while the Royals had three runs on five hits.
 
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, March 21st in a 12 p.m. doubleheader against East Texas Baptist University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
