MARSHALL, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team opened play in the East Texas Baptist University Spring Classic with an 11-1 win over Texas Lutheran University Friday in Marshall.
The Bulldogs put up one run in the second inning, scoring off an RBI groundout. UMHB answered in the fourth with Braden Fuentes, Austin Birkhoff and Tyler Martin all hitting home runs to take a 4-1 lead. Fuentes homered again in the fifth, scoring Taylor McDaniel for a 7-1 margin.
Riley Bender earned a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to bring another runner home before Taylor McDaniel hit in Martin with an RBI fielder's choice, putting the Cru up by eight runs. Easton Cline hit in Martin in the eighth, scoring him on a sacrifice fly to centerfield before Taylor McDaniel doubled, scoring Cameron Talburt for the 11-1 run-rule victory.
Alex Hill threw seven innings on the mound, scattering just five hits. Hill also threw 11 strikeouts, facing 28 total batters in the contest. Cole Morkovsky threw one shutout inning in relief.
Braden Fuentes led the Cru with four hits while Talburt and Birkhoff each added three. Fuentes also totaled a team-high four RBI with Tyler Martin leading the Cru with three runs scored.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, March 21st in an 11 a.m. contest against Texas Lutheran University and a 3 p.m. game against The College of Wooster. Both games will be played at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall.
