Softball sweeps doubleheader against Concordia

BELTON, Texas — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team earned two wins against Concordia Texas Monday afternoon. With these wins, the Cru's record improves to 13-15 on the season, while the Tornados fall to 22-6.

Concordia struck first, adding a run in the first inning and two in the third, taking a 3-0 lead. UMHB responded in the bottom of the fifth with four singles in a row, jumpstarted by Macy Alewine. A two-RBI hit from Bralyn Belk scored Ava Perlinger and Jordan Iverson, followed by a Tornado error to score Belk, knotting the game at three.

The matchup remained tied to head into the bottom of the seventh. Belk opened the frame with a triple to right field, followed by two walks to load the bases. UMHB was unable to capitalize, sending the game into extra innings. The Cru held the Tornados scoreless in the top of the eighth. UMHB sealed the extra-inning win, scoring the ghost runner Addy Todd from second on a Concordia throwing error.

Bralyn Belk went two-for-two at the plate, adding a triple, two RBI, and one run scored. Macy Alewine also added two hits in three at-bats. Chloe Booth earned the win in the circle, pitching eight complete innings with three strikeouts.

The Tornados opened game two with a three-run first inning. Bralyn Belk began the Cru's breakthrough in the third inning, hitting a lead-off double to left. Addy Todd added an RBI single to score Belk before Ryleigh Mills singled up the middle to score Vic Shimabukuro, who reached on an error. Macy Alewine rounded out the third-inning run with a two RBI double, giving the Cru a 5-3 lead.

After taking the Tornados down in order in the top of the fourth, Belk led the bottom of the frame off with a solo home run to extend UMHB's deficit to 6-3. Singles from Addy Todd and Jordan Iverson allowed the Cru to add one more in the bottom of the fifth. Belk and Sara Pelache opened the sixth inning with back-to-back singles. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the frame, Brielle Moreland came in to pinch hit, soaring a hit over the left field wall to walk off the 12-3 run-rule win for the Cru.

Bralyn Belk added three hits in three at-bats with a home run and a double, along with one RBI and two runs scored. Addy Todd and Jordan Iverson added two hits apiece. Madelyn Denn earned the win for the Cru in the circle, pitching a complete game with two strikeouts.

UMHB returns to action at Dee Dillon Field on Tuesday, April 7th, in a 4:00pm doubleheader against the University of St. Thomas (TX).
