Baseball earns run-rule win over Howard Payne

BELTON, Texas — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team earned a 15-5 run-rule win over Howard Payne University Friday afternoon. This win improves the Cru's record to 22-9 on the season with a 22-9 mark in American Southwest Conference action, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 13-16 (0-3) on the season.

Howard Payne got on the board early in the top of the first, scoring three on two hits. The Yellow Jackets added one more in the top of the fourth before UMHB responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs. Nolan Williams began the two-out rally with a double to left. Landon Pyles followed with a two-run homerun to cut HPU's lead in half. The Cru knotted the game at four in the bottom of the fifth when Cameron Talburt and Easton Cline got on to start the inning, both scoring on a Riley Bender double down the right field line. UMHB then took the lead when Bender scored on a Yellow Jacket throwing error, giving the Cru a 5-4 upper hand.

UMHB extended its lead in the sixth, opening with an RBI single from Talburt, scoring Jacob Newland. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases on walks, plating one, later scoring Talburt and Bender on a throwing error to first. Pyles then scored McDaniel with an RBI single, followed by a Jacob Newland double to right to score Birkhoff and Pyles, giving the Cru a 12-4 lead. Howard Payne got one back in the top of the seventh, moving the score to 12-5. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Talburt scored on a bases-loaded walk. Nolan Williams then walked it off on a two-RBI single to take the 15-5 run-rule win.

Nolan Williams led the Cru with three hits in five at-bats, with two RBI and one run scored. Cameron Talburt and Landon Pyles added two hits each, with a home run from Pyles.

Carter Kammlah earned the win on the mound after relieving starting pitcher Zach Hampton. Kammlah threw 2.2 innings, giving up just two hits and one earned run.

UMHB returns to action at Red Murff Field on Saturday, April 11th for senior day, in a 1:00pm match up to close out the series against Howard Payne.
