BROWNWOOD, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split a Friday doubleheader at Howard Payne University, earning a 7-2 win before falling 7-3. UMHB moved to 19-19 on the season with a 4-6 record in conference play.
Addy Todd put the Cru up in the second inning, scoring on an error. UMHB added three more runs in the fourth inning, scoring two off a double from
Shorey Nguyen and one off a single from
Vic Shimabukuro. Todd added another run in the fifth, scoring
Ava Jolley with a single to right field.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on one run in the fifth but UMHB answered with two more in the seventh, scoring
Jordan Iverson and
Addy Todd off back-to-back singles from Todd and
Ava Perlinger. Howard Payne added one more run but the Cru held on, sealing the 7-2 win.
Shorey Nguyen and
Jordan Iverson led the Cru with three hits each while Shimabukuro and Todd each added two. Todd also led the Cru with three runs scored while Nguyen and Todd each added two RBI.
Ella Gamblin earned the win in game one, pitching six innings with seven hits and two runs allowed. Gamblin struck out three batters in her outing with Beth Ann Johnson adding one inning in relief. UMHB totaled seven runs on 13 hits with one error while the Yellow Jackets tallied two runs on eight hits with two errors.
Howard Payne jumped to an early lead in game two, scoring five runs in the second inning and two in the third. UMHB fought back with a trio of fourth-inning scores off a pair of home runs from
Ryleigh Mills and
Madelyn Denn. UMHB put runners on in the sixth and seventh frames but couldn't bring anyone around, ending the game in a 7-3 HPU win.
Macy Alewine led the Cru with two hits while Mills, Alewine and Denn each added one run.
Alli Dafoe took the loss in the circle, tossing 1.1 innings with five runs allowed.
Beth Ann Johnston and
Madelyn Denn both threw in relief with Denn pitching a shutout 3.2 innings.
UMHB returns to action in a 12 p.m. doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets on Saturday, April 25
th in Brownwood.
