Softball sweeps doubleheader with Hardin-Simmons

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept a doubleheader over Hardin-Simmons University Thursday afternoon in Belton. The wins evened the Cru with a 2-2 record in American Southwest Conference action and a 17-15 record overall. The Cowgirls fell to 14-6 on the season with an 0-2 mark in league play.

UMHB took a lead in the first inning off a three-RBI home run from Macy Alewine but the Cowgirls responded, scoring two off a double in the top of the third. The Cowgirls put two more runners on in the fourth but a strikeout ended the inning scoreless. HSU threatened again in the sixth but a double play got the Cru out of the jam, still with a one-run lead. The Cru did not allow a base runner in the seventh, holding on for the 3-2 win.

Shorey Nguyen, Macy Alewine and Vic Shimabukuro each tallied hits for the Cru while Alewine, Ava Jolley and Bralyn Belk all added a run. Chloe Booth earned the win in the circle, throwing four innings with two runs and three hits allowed. Katherine Neal pitched in relief, giving up just one hit in three innings of work. UMHB totaled three runs on three hits while the Cowgirls had two runs on four hits.

The Cru took a second-inning lead in game two, scoring Sabrina Morgan off an RBI double from Jordan Iverson. Hardin-Simmons answered with two runs in the top of the third but a solo home run from Addy Todd in the bottom of that frame evened the game at two. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth when Vic Shimabukuro hit in Addy Todd with a single. Ava Perlinger hit in another run in the sixth, scoring Jordan Iverson with an RBI single for the 4-2 win.

Todd, Perlinger and Iverson led the Cru with two hits each while Todd added a team-high two runs. Madelyn Denn earned the win in the circle, throwing a complete seven innings with six hits and two runs allowed.
