Biography

Sam is an experienced lefty who has seen time as a starter and reliever. He will likely be one of the first left-handers to get a call out of the bullpen this season.

2012: Pitched in seven games for the Cru … Posted a 8.10 ERA with nine hits and three runs allowed … struck out three batters. 2011: Made appearances in 16 games with two starts … Posted a 1-2 record with a 7.97 ERA … Threw for two saves … Allowed 32 hits and 18 runs … struck out 22 batters.  

Sam’s favorite professional athlete is Nolan Ryan and his favorite sports team is the Texas Rangers. Sam enjoys hunting and playing with his dog when he’s not playing baseball and says he can’t believe he watches Honey Boo Boo. Sam came to UMHB because he wanted to play baseball while getting a good education. He says most people don’t know that he has never eaten cereal. Sam’s pre-game ritual is to listen to the same 25 songs before every game.
 
Sam is studying exercise and sport science at UMHB. He was an all-district and All-Centex baseball player at Salado High School where he also lettered in golf. Sam is the son of Ken and Janna VanHoozer.
