Final Draw with Results
Abilene, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's tennis team rolled through the American Southwest Conference Individual Tournament last weekend. The Cru women claimed four singles championships and a doubles title during the three-day event in Abilene.
Megan Aarhus won flight one singles for the Cru. She opened with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Molly Nicholas of Mississippi College, topped Gabi Crunelle of Howard Payne 6-2, 7-6(5) and the bested U.T.-Tyler's Amy Friesenhahn 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-3 in the finals.
Mallory Aarhus claimed the flight two singles championship. She beat Mindy Tiu of U.T.-Dallas 26-, 6-4, 10-6, outlasted Morgan Rainer of Hardin-Simmons 6-4, 7-6(2) and then beat U.T.-Tyler's Sydni Hermsdorf 6-3, 6-2 in the finals.
Chaley Shiffler won flight seven singles. Shiffler opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Alisha Lorren of U.T.-Dallas, before besting MC's Kylie Weeks 6-2, 6-1. She then beat McMurry's Sydney Gonzales 6-0, 6-0 and topped Lauren Zugai of McMurry 6-4, 6-3 in the finals. Also in flight seven, Hayley Loftus opened with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over Chelsea Miller of McMurry before falling to Zugai 6-1, 6-4.
Angelie Juaneza grabbed the flight eighth title for the Cru. She had a first-round bye, took her second round match when her opponent retired, topped McMurry's Nicole Shortes 6-0, 6-2 and then beat Stephanie Lu of U.T.-Dallas 6-2, 6-4 in the finals.
The Aarhus sisters teamed up to win flight one doubles for UMHB. After a first-round bye, Megan and Mallory beat LeTourneau's Case and Goodwin 8-1, bested LeMieux and Del Hierro of McMurry 8-3 and then won 8-5 over Friesenhahn and Hermsdorf of U.T.-Tyler in the finals.
In flight three singles,
Megan Richardson won the consolation crown. She fell to Centenary's Olivia West 6-4, 6-2 before beating Karson Kent of ETBU 6-0, 6-0. Richardson topped LeTourneau's Ali Goodwin 7-6(2), 4-6, 10-4 before beating Kelley Spahn of Schreiner 6-2, 6-0 in the final.
Penelope Kittel advanced to the semifinals of flight four singles. She opened with a bye and then a 7-6(7), 6-1 win over Kaitlyn Cornwell of Centenary. Kittel then lost to U.T.-Tyler's Ashley Albro 6-3, 6-1 in the semis.
AshLee Bilbo would fall in the semifinals in flight five singles. She opened with a bye and then a 6-3, 6-2 win over Emilee Stephens of Howard Payne. Bilbo would fall to Cindy Tiu of U.T.-Dallas 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.
Carrie Ramos would also advance to the semifinals in flight six singles. She had a first-round bye, beat Samantha Guerrero of Howard Payne 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 in the second round and then lost to McMurry's Hilary Stone 6-4, 6-3 in the semis.
Bilbo and Richardson advanced to the finals in flight two doubles. They opened with an 8-3 win over Centenary's West and Cornwell, beat Albro and Blundell of U.T.-Tyler 8-6 before falling to Rainer and Nahn of Hardin-Simmons 8-2 in the finals.
Shiffler and Juaneza lost in the semifinals of flight three doubles. They opened with an 8-3 win over Wallace and Lewis of the Ozarks before falling to McMurry's Miller and Stone 8-3 in the semis.
Ramos and Kittel fell in the flight four doubles quarterfinals, losing to Zugai and Krusemark of McMurry 8-6.
