Pete
Fredenburg began his career in Texas as a coach at several high schools including Canyon High School, New Braunfels High School, and
Giddings High School. He has coached more than twenty players who have played professional football. After starting the
UMHB football program in 1998, it took
Fredenburg just four seasons to take the Cru to the NCAA Division III playoffs and just five years for him to guide
UMHB to an American Southwest Conference championship. In only the seventh season of
UMHB football,
Fredenburg had the Cru in the NCAA Division III National Championship game.
UMHB won the NCAA Division III National Championship with a 57-24 win over North Central College in Stagg Bowl XLVIIIÂ in 2021. That marked the program's second national title as the Cru earned a 24-16 victory over Mount Union in
Stagg Bowl
XLVI in 2018. The Cru set ASC records in both seasons going undefeated at 15-0.Â
Fredenburg has compiled a 231-39 record in 24 seasons as the only head coach in the history of the
UMHB football program and he currently ranks among the top five active Division III head coaches in career victories. The Cru were ASC Champions in 2021, 2020-21, 2019, 2018, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, and ASC Tri-Champions in 2015 and 2003 after winning their first ASC Championship in 2002. The Cru also finished the 2004 and 2017 seasons ranked 2nd in the nation in all three of the major Division III National Polls and finished at #1 in the country in every major poll following the 2016, 2018 and 2021 campaigns. AFCA All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans, 152 All-Region selections, 452 All-Conference players, 19 Academic All-District VI players and 231 Academic All-Conference selections during his tenure at
UMHB. The Cru has also earned 17 trips to the NCAA Division III Football Championships under Coach
Fredenburg, claiming berths in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021.
Fredenburg is a 10-time ASC Coach of the Year and has also earned
AFCA Regional Coach of the Year honors ten times in his career. He was named Liberty Mutual Division III Coach of the Year and also claimed American Football Monthly Division III Coach of the Year honors (2013), AFCA Division III National Coach of the Year honors (2016) and D3football.com Coach of the Year honors (2021).
Fredenburg was elected to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in the fall of 2017 and was officially inducted in April of 2018.
He had a thirteen-year tenure at Baylor University as Defensive Coordinator and assistant head coach. After the job at Baylor, he then moved to Louisiana State University. After one year at LSU, he was given the opportunity to be the Defensive Coordinator at Louisiana Tech University. He remained there for three years.
