Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team took an early lead and never looked back as the Cru posted a three-set victory over LeTourneau in a must-win match for UMHB Thursday evening in Belton. UMHB knocked off the Yellow Jackets 25-15, 25-23, 25-23 to stay alive in the hunt for a postseason berth. The Cru improves to 8-24 overall and 5-11 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 6-20 overall and 2-14 in the ASC on the season.
The Cru would trail 6-4 early in the first set before UMHB won 13 of the next 16 points to take control. LeTourneau would open up a 6-3 lead in the second set and the Yellow Jackets would lead 18-11 before the Cru started its comeback. UMHB would tie the match at 20 before pulling out the win. UMHB would then lead 21-17 late in the third set before LeTourneau rallied to cut it to 24-23. The Cru would then clinch the match on an attack error on match point.
Kaydie Cochran led the Cru with 10 kills and she also added 10 digs. Christina Miller had eight kills and six total blocks. Kayla Marzean posted 28 assists for UMHB and Erin Maenius had a team-best 12 digs. Cochran and Sara Hayward also added five block assists apiece for the Cru in the victory.
Kristen Chapman led LeTourneau with 17 kills and she also added 11 digs. Kayla Blucher had a team-high 12 digs and Magen Douglas also reached double figures with 11 digs. Kathryn Drinkard had 29 assists to lead the Yellow Jackets.
The Cru will now close out the regular season with a 7:00 PM home match against U.T.-Tyler tomorrow night at the Mayborn Campus Center. A UMHB victory would clinch an ASC Championship Tournament berth for the Cru. A UMHB loss would give that berth to Mississippi College.
The UMHB volleyball team is also participating in Dig Pink activities during this final weekend of the regular season. The Cru is wearing pink uniforms, selling pink t-shirts and raffling off signed, pink volleyballs as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Dig For The Cure campaign.
