Marshall, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team closed out the American Southwest Conference Cross-Over Tournament with a pair of heartbreaking losses Saturday in Marshall. The Cru had chances to win both matches but fell short against both Texas Lutheran University and Schreiner University to fall to 6-17 overall and 3-5 in ASC play on the season.
UMHB won sets two and three, but could not put Texas Lutheran away in a 25-20, 24-26, 18-25, 25-19, 15-11 loss to the Bulldogs to open the day. Christina Miller led the Cru with 14 kills and she also added five total blocks. Nicole Cowan had 11 kills and Kaydie Cochran added a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs. Kayla Marzean had a team-best 41 assists and also chipped in with 14 digs for the Cru. Erin Maenius posted a team-high 38 digs and Elise Butler also added 22 digs.
UMHB then won the first and third sets, but could not hold off a late Schreiner University comeback in a 21-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 15-11 loss to the Mountaineers. Erin Tabb had a season-high 14 kills to lead four players in double figures for the Cru. Miller added 12 kills and Cowan had 10. Cochran posted another double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs and she also recorded a pair of service aces. Maenius had 29 digs while Butler added 13 and Alexis Tharp had a team-high 27 assists.
The Cru will now return home for the first home matches of the fall next week. UMHB will host Southwestern University for a 7:00 PM start on Tuesday night. The Cru will then welcome U.T.-Dallas to the Mayborn Campus Center for a 7:00 PM start on Friday and will close out the week with a 2:00 PM start against East Texas Baptist University on Saturday.
