Brownwood, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team could not overcome a first-half deficit and the Cru dropped a 4-0 decision to Howard Payne University Saturday afternoon in Brownwood. The loss drops the UMHB men to 13-3 overall and 11-2 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. Howard Payne improves to 9-7-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the ASC with the victory and the Yellow Jackets also clinch a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament.
The two teams were scoreless late into the first half before Howard Payne scored a pair of quick goals. Shane Cazad scored off an assist from Malcolm Wentworth at the 38:54 mark to make it 1-0. Wentworth then scored of an assist from Jaime Benitez just 1:09 later to give HPU a 2-0 halftime lead. Cazad added an unassisted goal just 33 seconds into the second half to make it 3-0 Yellow Jackets and Brice Reusink added an unassisted goal with 4:31 left to play to provide the final margin.
Mark Miller had two saves in goal for the Cru and Francisco Medina had nine saves to post the shutout for Howard Payne. UMHB had given up a total of four goals in its first 12 ASC matches of the season before the Yellow Jackets offensive explosion on Saturday.
The Cru men had already clinched the ASC regular season championship and the right to host next weekend's ASC Championship Tournament. The ASC Tournament will be played November 6th, 7th and 8th at the Cru Sports Plex. UMHB will have a first-round bye and will open play with a semifinal match on Saturday, November 7th.
