Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team could not overcome a slow start and the Cru fell in the 2009 home opener in three sets to nationally-ranked Southwestern University. The loss drops UMHB to 6-18 overall on the season. Southwestern, ranked 14
th in the country in the AVCA Top 25 Poll released today, improves to 15-3 overall on the year with the victory.
UMHB fell behind early on the way to a 25-9, 25-15, 25-18 loss. The Cru would actually take an 11-8 lead early in the second set before the Pirates won 17 of the final 21 points for the victory. UMHB would tie the third set at 12 before another Southwestern charge put the match away.
Christina Miller led the Cru with 11 kills and Kaydie Cochran added six more. Erin Maenius had a team-high 21 digs and Alexis Tharp paced UMHB with 16 assists. Audra Gentry led Southwestern with 12 kills and four other players added five or more kills as the Pirates hit .343 as a team. Sam Lingamfelter led Southwestern with 12 digs and Christina Nicholls had a team-high 34 assists.
The Cru will now continue its home stand with a pair of key American Southwest Conference East Division showdowns this weekend. UMHB will host 13th-ranked U.T.-Dallas for a 7:00 PM start on Friday before welcoming East Texas Baptist University to the Mayborn Campus Center for a 2:00 PM start on Saturday.
