Women's basketball opens season with 73-52 win over Southwestern

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team built a commanding first half lead over Southwestern University and never looked back as the Cru rolled to a 73-52 over the Pirates Saturday afternoon in Belton. The UMHB women open the season with a 1-0 record. The loss drops Southwestern to 0-2 on the season.
            UMHB jumped out to an early 7-1 lead after a Kellie Thomas two-pointer. After a successful driving lay-up by Jenny Black, the Cru would go up to a 12-1 lead after five minutes of action. In the closing seconds of the first half, the Pirates Katie Kern would score on a lay-up to make it a 37-22 ball game still in favor of the Cru. Mallory McAdam's two-pointer to open up the second half would give the Cru a 39-22 lead. The Pirates were able to get the deficit down to ten points after a clutch two-pointer and free-throw made by Shae Seagraves, but that was as close as they would get. The Cru would go on to open up the lead to as much as twenty-two points after a two-pointer made by Stacie Stephens and win this afternoon's ball game.
            Mallory McAdams led the Cru with 15 points and also had seven assists. Kallie White also put up double digit points with 14 for UMHB. Lindsay Eaton added nine more points and grabbed eight rebounds and Landie Thompson also chipped in with nine rebounds. Shae Seagraves scored a total of 16 points and grabbed three rebounds for the Pirates. Staley Mullins posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Southwestern.
            UMHB out rebounded the Pirates 39-33 in the game and shot 79 percent from the free-throw line. The Cru was also able to force 22 turnovers during the game.
            The Cru women will return to action with a non-conference game at Trinity University next Tuesday night. That game will start at 6:00 PM in San Antonio. UMHB will then hit the road to open American Southwest Conference play at U.T.-Dallas next Saturday.
