Men's basketball edges Concordia 85-84

Austin, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team took a lead with eight seconds left and then held off Concordia's last second shot attempt as the Cru posted an 85-84 victory over the Tornados Thursday night in Austin. UMHB improves to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Tornados to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the ASC on the season.
            The Cru would trail by as many as nine points in the second half before battling back to take a 62-61 lead with 9:34 remaining. Concordia would stretch the lead back to seven points at 74-67 with 5:59 left to play. UMHB would use a 7-0 run to tie the game at 74 and the two teams would trade the lead the rest of the way. Jonathan Hutton's three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining gave the Tornados an 84-83 lead. Theo Ard would then give the Cru an 85-84 lead with eight seconds left and Kenny Williams missed a lay-up with one second to play as UMHB held on for the victory. UMHB would trail 40-34 at halftime and the game featured 12 ties.

            Zane Johnston led UMHB with 21 points and he hit 3-4 from three-point range. Ard finished with 16 points for the Cru and he also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Dean Pele chipped in 13 points and seven boards for UMHB and Sterling Phillips added 12 points. Brad Walker led Concordia with 26 points and he also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Hutton had 19 points and went 3-5 from beyond the arc. Reza Farahani also reached double figures with 12 points for the Tornados.

            UMHB shot 50 per cent from the field in the game and hit 53 per cent in the second half. The Cru also went 3-5 from three-point range in the second half. UMHB was 20-32 from the free-throw line and forced 22 Concordia turnovers. The Tornados shot 45 per cent from the field and 48 per cent from three-point range in the game.

            The UMHB men will continue their road trip with a 7:00 PM tip-off at U.T.-Tyler on Saturday. The Cru will then have 17 days off before returning to action with the Cru Holiday Classic at the Mayborn Campus Center on December 29th and 30th.
