Austin, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team built a second-half lead and then held off a Concordia Texas comeback as the Cru women posted a 66-63 victory over the Tornados Thursday night in Austin. The UMHB women improve to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops Concordia to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the ASC on the season.
UMHB led by as many as eight points in the first half before Concordia cut the lead to 35-31 at halftime. The Cru women would then push the lead to 11 points at 55-44 with 10:40 remaining in the game. Concordia would begin to chip away at the lead and Margaret Milling hit a pair of free-throws to cut the gap to 63-61 with 37 seconds left to play. Jessica Kelly would answer with a free-throw for UMHB and Caitlin Barganier added two more free-throws to push the lead back to 66-61 with 13 seconds to go. Jackie Eddins would hit a jump shot for the Tornados with one second left to provide the final margin.
Barganier topped UMHB with 13 points and she hit 3-4 from three-point range. Kellie Thomas added 12 points for the Cru and nine different players scored for UMHB in the game. Four different players grabbed a team-high five rebounds for the Cru. Brianna Smith led Concordia with 13 points and Kerrie Carter added 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Tornados.
UMHB shot 47 per cent from the field in the game and hit 43 per cent from three-point range. Concordia shot 36 per cent from the field and 25 per cent from beyond the arc. The Cru also out rebounded the Tornados 35-31 to help overcome 23 UMHB turnovers.
The Cru women will continue their road trip with a 5:00 PM tip-off at U.T.-Tyler on Saturday. The UMHB women will then have 17 days off before returning to action with a pair of games at the Trinity University Holiday Tournament on December 28th and 29th.
