Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team didn't exactly look pretty, but at times the Cru did look overpowering as UMHB rolled to a 41-8 victory over McMurry University Saturday night in Belton. The Cru improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. UMHB has also now won 31 consecutive ASC games. McMurry falls to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the ASC with the loss.
After forcing a three-and-out on McMurry first possession, the Cru drove the ball 81 yards in 12 plays, capped by Quincy Daniels one-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead at the 8:02 mark. It would stay that way as the Cru sandwiched two punts around a fumble before UMHB finally struck again when Daniels capped another long drive with a three-yard TD run. The run capped an 11-playd, 84-yard drive and made it 14-0 UMHB with 4:17 left in the first half. That would be the score at halftime after the Cru defense held the McMurry offense to 43 yards of total offense, including -38 rushing yards in the first half. UMHB would drive to the McMurry two-yard line on the opening drive of the second half before turning the ball over on downs. The Cru would force a McMurry punt on the ensuing possession. Micah Spicer broke through to block the punt and scooped it up in the end zone for another UMHB TD and a 21-0 Cru lead. Lee Munn intercepted a Jake Mullin pass on the next McMurry possession and took it 31 yards for a score to give UMHB a 28-0 lead. A McMurry quick kick pinned the Cru at its own two-yard line, but UMHB back-up quarterback LiDarral Bailey took the team 98 yards in just four plays, with 93 of those coming on Bailey runs. Bailey capped the drive with a 14-yard TD run to make it 34-0. McMurry blocked the extra point attempt and Jimmy Terrell returned it the distance for a 34-2 UMHB lead. McMurry's offense finally got on the scoreboard on Mullin's one-yard TD pass to Delfonte Diamond with 13:11 left in the game. The Cru would score its final touchdown when Bryson Tucker scooped up a Kennan Alford fumble and raced seven yards for a score to provide the final margin.
The Cru offense rushed for 346 yards and rolled up 466 yards of total offense. The Cru defense would hold McMurry to -17 yards rushing and just 170 yards of total offense. UMHB fumbled the ball away twice and was penalized 10 times for 120 yards, including a pair of touchdown nullifying penalties.
Bailey ran for 97 yards and a touchdown on just six carries. Daniels added 57 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and became just the fifth player in UMHB history to go over 2,000 yards career rushing. Kyle Noack was 7-10 passing for 70 yards for the Cru and Ervin Johnson caught a team-high four passes for 41 yards. Mullin was 22-43 passing for McMurry for 166 yards and a TD, but he was also sacked five times and threw the costly pick six to Munn. Marcus Franklin and Chantz Purvis caught four passes apiece for McMurry. Javicz Jones led the Cru defense with eight tackles and four other players added five tackles apiece. Will Morris topped McMurry with 12 total tackles and Andrew Wallace chipped in 11 stops.
UMHB will now travel to Abilene next Saturday to take on Hardin-Simmons University. The Cowboys are 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the ASC after a 39-34 loss at Mississippi College today. The winner of the UMHB/Hardin-Simmons game has won at least a share of the ASC Championship every year since the first meeting between the two teams in 1998.
