Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team stormed back from an early deficit with 24-0 run in the first half and the Cru women never looked back on the way to an 84-51 victory over Concordia Texas Monday night in Belton. The UMHB women improve to 9-4 overall and 6-3 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The Cru women have also now won five straight games. The loss drops the Tornados to 5-8 overall and 3-6 in the ASC on the year.
Concordia opened the game with a 7-2 run before the Cru exploded. UMHB went on a 24-0 run and grabbed a 26-7 lead with 8:39 remaining in the first half. The Tornados would not get closer than 17 points the rest of the half as UMHB took a 40-15 lead into the locker room at halftime. The closest Concordia would get in the second half would be 21 points as the Cru continued to pull away for the easy victory.
Kallie White led the Cru with 15 points and Kellie Thomas came off the bench to add 13. Stacie Stephens had 12 points for UMHB and Lindsey Eaton added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Cru. Kerrie Carter led Concordia with 18 points and Brianna Smith joined her in double figures with 12 points. Deja Thomas had a team-best nine rebounds off the bench for the Tornados.
UMHB shot 48 per cent from the field in the victory and hit 13-26 from three-point range. Concordia shot just 33 per cent from the field and went 4-11 from beyond the arc. UMHB out rebounded the Tornados 40-37 and forced 23 Concordia turnovers in the dominating performance.
UMHB will continue its home stand with two more ASC West Division games this week. The Cru will host Sul Ross State University for a 5:30 PM tip-off on Thursday night before closing out a five-game home stand with a 1:00 PM start against Howard Payne University on Saturday.
