Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team took control of the game early in the first half and never looked back as the Cru posted its ninth straight victory with a 66-46 win over Schreiner University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The UMHB women improve to 13-4 overall and 10-3 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. UMHB also holds on to sole possession of first place in the ASC West Division with the victory. The loss drops the Mountaineers to 0-17 overall and 0-13 in ASC play on the year.
The Cru held Schreiner scoreless for the first 4:23 of the game and UMHB built its first double-digit lead of the day at 13-3 with 14:02 remaining in the first half. The Cru would hold a 34-16 lead at halftime and UMHB pushed the lead to as many as 22 points early in the second half. The Mountaineers went on a run to cut the lead to 11 points at 57-46 with 3:53 left to play. UMHB answered with a 9-0 run to close the game and ice the victory.
Stacie Stephens and Kellie Thomas led a balanced Cru scoring attack with 13 points apiece. Lindsay Eaton also reached double figures with 11 points for UMHB. Eleven different players scored for the Cru in the victory. Candi Althaus came off the bench to go 6-12 from three-point range to lead the Mountaineers with 18 points. Kira Chester added 14 points and six rebounds for Schreiner.
The Cru shot 46 per cent from the field and 47 per cent from three-point range in the game. Schreiner hit 33 per cent from the field and 35 per cent from beyond the arc. UMHB also forced 24 turnovers in the win.
The Cru women will now hit the road for a pair of crucial ASC West Division games next week in Abilene. UMHB will face McMurry University in a 5:30 PM start on Thursday before closing out the week with a 1:00 PM tip-off at Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday.
