Abilene, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team built a double-digit first half lead and the Cru would not allow McMurry to get back into the game as UMHB posted a 73-62 victory over McMurry Thursday night in Abilene. The Cru women improve to 14-4 overall and 11-3 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The UMHB women have now won ten straight games to hold on to sole possession of first place in the ASC West Division. The loss drops McMurry to 10-7 overall and 7-6 in the ASC on the season.
The Cru opened the game with a 9-2 run and would stretch the lead to as many as 11 points in the first half before settling for a 32-23 halftime lead. McMurry would close to within six points at 38-32 early in the second half, but UMHB used a 14-4 run to open up a 16-point lead at 52-36 with 12:25 left to play. The lead would grow to 18 points before a McMurry rally cut it to 65-57 with 2:40 left on the clock. The Cru scored the next four points and never looked back on the way to the 11-point victory. UMHB would not lead by less than double digits in the final 2:07 of the contest.
Lindsay Eaton had another huge game for the Cru, hitting 10-19 from the field for a season-high 24 points. Stacie Stephens had 10 points and nine rebounds for UMHB and Kallie White also reached double figures with 10 points. Jessica Kelly added eight points and nine boards for the Cru, who had six different players score eight or more points. Kelsey Lindemuth topped McMurry with 17 points and LaPorsha Alexander added 14 more off the bench.
The Cru shot 44 per cent from the field and went 4-10 from three-point range. UMHB held McMurry to just 35 per cent shooting from the field and 3-12 shooting from beyond the arc. The Cru also won the rebounding battle 45-37.
UMHB will continue its road trip with a 3:00 PM tip-off at Hardin-Simmons University Saturday in Abilene. The Cru will then return home to host McMurry and HSU next week at the Mayborn Campus Center.
