Abilene, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team never trailed in the second half and the Cru rolled to its 11
th straight victory with a 68-60 win over Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon in Abilene. The UMHB women improve to 15-4 overall and 12-3 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. The 11-game winning streak is the longest for the Cru women since the program made the move to NCAA Division III play beginning with the 1998-1999 season. The loss drops the Cowgirls to 10-8 overall and 7-7 in the ASC on the year.
The two teams traded the lead six times and were tied eight times through the first half. HSU led by as many as four points before the Cru closed the half with a 4-0 run to take a 31-29 halftime lead. There would be three more quick ties at the start of the second half before UMHB used a 5-0 run to take a 42-37 lead at the 14:51 mark. HSU would close to within 42-40 and then 54-52, but UMHB used a 6-0 run to grab an eight-point lead at 60-52 with 4:25 to go. The Cowgirls would not get closer than five points the rest of the way as the Cru would push the lead to as many as 11 points before coasting to the eight-point victory.
Jessica Kelly led the Cru with 15 points and she hit 3-3 from three-point range. Caitlin Barganier added 14 points and six assists for UMHB and Lindsay Eaton and Kellie Thomas added 14 points apiece for the Cru. Eaton also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Angela Newcombe had a team-high 14 points for Hardin-Simmons and Becky Taylor posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Bo Warm and Jasmine Lewis also scored 10 points apiece for the Cowgirls.
UMHB shot a blistering 56 per cent from the field and the Cru hit 61 per cent from the field in the second half. UMHB also shot 46 per cent from three-point range and held the Cowgirls to 37 per cent shooting in the victory. HSU won the rebounding battle 34-28 and both teams turned the ball over 15 times in the game.
The Cru will now return home for a rematch of this week's action next week. UMHB will host McMurry University for a 5:30 PM tip-off on Thursday night before closing out the week with a 1:00 PM start against Hardin-Simmons at the Mayborn Campus Center next Saturday.
