Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team stormed out to a huge second-half lead and then held off a furious Louisiana College rally as the Cru women posted a 53-44 victory over the 22nd-ranked Wildcats Thursday evening in Belton. UMHB improves to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops Louisiana College to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the ASC on the year.
UMHB opened the game with an 8-0 run and would stretch the lead to 18-8 with a second 8-0 run after the Wildcats had pulled to within 10-8. LC would cut it to 21-15 at halftime. The Cru opened the second half with another outburst and UMHB would build a 51-30 lead with 5:13 remaining in the game. The Wildcats would shut down the Cru offense and go on a 14-0 run to close the gap to 51-44 with 55 seconds left, but LC would not score again. UMHB added free throws from Kallie White and Caitlin Barganier to provide the final margin of victory.
White led UMHB with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Stacie Stephens came off the bench to add nine points and the Cru had eight different players scored in a balanced attack. Roslyn Wilmer topped LC with 11 points and Joanna Tate added nine points, all in the final five minutes of the game. Tillisha Givens and Voneshia Williams grabbed seven rebounds apiece for the Wildcats.
UMHB held LC to just 31 per cent shooting from the field and 25 per cent from three-point range. The Cru shot 52 per cent from the field in the second half and went 5-9 from three-point range in the second half. UMHB also out rebounded the Wildcats 41-34 to help overcome 24 turnovers in the game.
The UMHB women will continue their home stand with a 1:00 PM tip-off against Mississippi College on Saturday. The Cru women will then play three more home games next week to close out a stretch of five straight home games.
