Volleyball drops two matches on opening day of ASC Crossover

Austin, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team kept it close in both matches, but the Cru could not pull out a victory and went 0-2 on the first day of the American Southwest Conference Dig Pink Crossover Challenge Friday in Austin. UMHB fell to McMurry University and Texas Lutheran University by 3-1 scores to drop to 9-16 overall and 3-8 in the ASC on the season.
            The Cru won the first set but could not put the match away in a 23-25, 27-25, 31-29, 25-19 loss to McMurry University to open the day. Tina Miller led UMHB with 22 kills and she added three service aces and six total blocks. Kimberly Smidovec had 15 kills, 10 digs and four block assists. Erin Maenius topped the Cru with 26 digs and Kaydie Cochran added 16 digs to go with eight kills. Sara Hayward also reached double figures in kills for UMHB with 11 on the day. Anissa Garcia had 31 assists and Alexis Tharp added 22 for the Cru.

            UMHB then dropped a 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21 decision to Texas Lutheran University to close out the day. Maenius again topped the Cru with 23 digs and she added two service aces. Miller had a team-high 17 kills and Smidovec added nine kills and 13 digs. Garcia and Tharp also both posted double-doubles for UMHB. Garcia finished with 18 assists and 11 digs and Tharp recorded 13 assists and 13 digs.

            The Cru will close out the tournament with two more matches tomorrow. UMHB will face Hardin-Simmons and Concordia Texas tomorrow. The Cru will then return home to host LeTourneau University in a 7:00 PM start next Thursday at the Mayborn Campus Center.
