Abilene, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team took an early lead, but the Cru could not hold on in a 2-1 overtime loss to Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon in Abilene. The loss drops the 23
rd-ranked Cru to 10-3 overall and 7-3 in American Southwest Conference play. The Cowboys improve to 9-3 overall and 6-3 in the ASC on the season with the victory.
UMHB would take a 1-0 lead just 2:16 into the match when
Bo Baker scored off an assist from
Derek Geels. It would stay that way into the 52
nd minute before Hardin-Simmons tied the match. John Anumu scored the equalizer off an Isaiah Hicks assist at the 51:14 mark. UMHB would have a couple of chances to win the match in the final minutes of regulation, but Cowboys goalkeeper Logan Waters made two big saves. The Cru would have another chance to win the match 1:19 into the extra period, but Waters again made the save. Cru goalkeeper
Mark Miller would turn aside a shot from Hicks 2:57 into overtime, but Hicks would then feed Harrison Heger for the game-winner three seconds later.
Miller finished with five saves in goal for the Cru and Waters also had five saves in goal for the Cowboys. HSU held a 13-10 edge in shots. The teams combined for 29 fouls and four yellow cards in the match.
The Cru will now return home to close out the regular season with three home matches. That stretch starts with a 3:00 PM match against Howard Payne University next Saturday at the Cru Sports Plex.
