Marshall, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team answered an East Texas Baptist rally with an 11-yard
Quincy Daniels touchdown run in overtime and the Cru escaped with a 34-28 overtime win over the Tigers Saturday in Marshall. The 4
th-ranked Cru improves to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Tigers to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in ASC play on the year.
The two teams went to overtime tied at 28 and the Cru won the toss, giving ETBU the first possession. Defensive end
Brenson Bristow broke through to sack Tiger quarterback Sed Harris for a seven-yard loss on the opening play. After two incomplete passes, Brett Peddicord was short on a 49-yard field goal attempt. After a rush for no gain on the first play,
LiDarral Bailey hit
Trey Hazelton for a 13-yard gain to the Tiger 12-yard line. Daniels ran for one yard on first down and then broke through untouched for the game-winning, 11-yard dash on the next play to give UMHB the victory.
The Cru would lead by as many as 11 points in the second half before the Tigers stormed back to tie the game.
Damian Davis hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass with 9:18 to go in the third quarter to tie the game at 14.
Geoff Myles returned a punt 47 yards for a score to make it 21-14 Cru with 8:39 left in the third. Peddicord would hit a 27-yard field goal to cut it to 21-17 with 11:55 to play. UMHB then seemed to take control of the game on Bailey's nine-yard touchdown pass to
Ervin Johnson with 7:31 remaining. But ETBU answered when Kwame Spikes hit Al Lewis with a 71-yard TD pass on a reserve on the first play following the ensuing kickoff. The Tigers converted a two-point conversion to close to within 28-25. After a UMHB punt, ETBU drove to the Cru 14-yard line, but UMHB's defense stiffened and held the Tigers to Peddicord's 28-yard field goal with 48 seconds left to tie the game at 28. The Cru would quickly drive to the ETBU 27, but
Alan Munoz was wide left on a 44-yard field goal as time expired, sending the game to overtime.
The Tigers roared out to a 14-0 lead. UMHB held ETBU on downs on the Tigers' opening possession and take over on the Cru one-yard line. A botched snap was recovered in the UMHB end zone by ETBU's for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 4:52 left in the first quarter. The Tigers would force a UMHB punt before driving 52 yards in four plays. Harris hit Malcolm Wiltz with an 11-yard TD toss to stretch the lead to 14-0 with 1:45 to play in the first quarter. The Cru closed the gap to 14-7 with a 10-play, 80-yard drive capped by Daniels' eight-yard scoring run with 1:59 left in the first half.
The Cru finished with 203 rushing yards and 378 yards of total offense. ETBU managed 449 yards of total offense with 293 of those coming through the air. UMHB turned the ball over twice while forcing just one Tiger turnover.
Daniels finished with 110 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries and moved into second place on the Cru's career rushing list. Daniels passed Freddie Rollins and now trails only Justin Bryson and his total of 3,672 yards by 246 yards. The 100-yard game was also the 17
th of Daniels career, tying Bryson's school record. Bailey added 78 rushing yards and he was 10-16 passing for 175 yards and a pair of scores. Davis caught five passes for 110 yards and a score for the Cru.
Ty Dooley and
Javicz Jones led the UMHB defense with 12 tackles apiece.
Harris ran for 106 yards for the Tigers and went 22-40 passing for 212 yards and a score. Spikes caught eight passes for 52 yards to go with his 71-yard TD toss. Jordan Hayes and Jon Chitty tied for the ETBU team lead with nine tackles apiece.
The overtime game was the fourth in UMHB football history and the Cru improves to 3-1 in overtime games with the victory. UMHB will now return home to host Howard Payne University for a 2:00 PM kickoff next Saturday at Tiger Field.
