Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team fought back from an early deficit, but the Cru comeback fell just short in a 3-2 loss to Howard Payne University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The loss drops the UMHB women to 6-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in American Southwest Conference play. The Yellow Jackets improve to 7-4-3 overall and 6-3-2 in ASC play with the victory.
Howard Payne would grab a 1-0 lead when Leslie Jones scored off an assist from Erica Lopez 26:01 into the match. It would stay that way into the second half before two quick HPU goals stretched the lead to 3-0. Kerrie Ford scored off an Allison Harp assist at the 60:51 mark and Mitsy Dominigues used a Shannon Costello assist to convert the third goal just 1:48 later. The Cru would start its comeback six minutes later when
Kim Wobecky scored an unassisted goal in the 69
th minute.
Jordan Powers would convert a penalty kick for the Cru women in the 80
th minute to close the gap to 3-2, but UMHB would not get another shot.
Meredith West finished with two saves in goal for the Cru women. Kaitlyn Kelm had five saves in goal for the Yellow Jackets. UMHB out shot HPU 9-7 in a physical match that saw the two teams combine for 23 fouls and a pair of yellow cards.
The Cru women will close out the regular season with three home matches next week. UMHB will host Austin College for a 2:00 PM non-conference match on Monday. The Cru will then return to ASC play with home matches against Schreiner University and Texas Lutheran University on Friday and Saturday at the Cru Sports Plex.
