Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team could not hold on to an early lead and the Cru women fell 2-1 to Austin College in a non-conference match Monday afternoon in Belton. The loss drops the Cru women to 6-8-1 on the season. Austin College improves to 11-4 on the year with the victory.
UMHB grabbed a 1-0 lead when
Laura Briner took a long pass from
Tori Seiler on a breakaway and drove the ball past Kangaroo goalkeeper Kaitlin Elledge 12:57 into the match. It would stay that way into the second half before Austin College scored on Natalie Nelms' free kick to tie the match 5:46 into the second period. The Kangaroos would take a 2-1 lead when Shelley Casey used a Lauren Scott assist and sent the ball into the near corner past UMHB keeper
Erica Harris' diving save attempt. The Cru would have a chance to tie the match in the final minute, but
Kim Wobecky's shot sailed high.
Elledge finished with three saves in goal for Austin College. Harris had four saves for the Cru women. UMHB played the final 75:48 of the match with a man advantage after Austin College's Kelsey D'Amore was red carded for punching a Cru player. There were 18 total fouls in the match and four cards issued. The two teams combined for just 16 shots on a windy afternoon and all of the scoring came into the wind.
UMHB will now close out the regular season with a pair of home American Southwest Conference matches this weekend. The Cru will host Schreiner University for a 1:00 PM start on Friday before taking on Texas Lutheran University in a 1:00 PM start on Saturday.
