Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team played 110 minutes scoreless minutes and overcame a man disadvantage for the last 52:45 of those as the Cru played Schreiner University to a 0-0 double overtime tie Friday afternoon in Belton. The UMHB men are now 11-3-1 overall and 8-3-1 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. Schreiner is 10-4-4 overall and 7-2-3 in the ASC on the year.
The two teams played a sluggish first half and combined for 14 shots, but put just three of those shots on goal. The two teams would come out with more aggressive styles in the second half. UMHB would take 10 shots and put four of those on goal and Schreiner put four of its eight second-half shots on goal. The Cru would go a man down when
Neiko Camp was red-carded after a collision on a scoring chance in the box at the 57:15 mark of the match. Both goalkeepers came up big the rest of the way and held the teams off the scoreboard. UMHB appeared to win the match in overtime, but a goal was waved off after the ball was ruled to have crossed the end line before it was centered for the goal.
Mark Miller finished with seven saves in goal for the Cru and he posted his eighth shutout of the season. Matt Johnson posted five saves in a shutout performance for the Mountaineers. UMHB outshot the Mountaineers 22-17 and also recorded a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Cru men will close out the regular season with a 3:00 PM home match against Texas Lutheran University tomorrow at the Cru Sports Plex. The UMHB men are very much alive in the hunt for a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament and win on Saturday would clinch a spot.
