Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team fought back from a pair of deficits, but the Cru could not come all the way back in a 3-2 loss to Mississippi College Friday night in Belton. The loss drops UMHB to 9-21 overall and 3-13 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The Choctaws improve to 14-15 overall and 7-8 in the ASC with the victory.
The two teams traded wins through the first four sets and UMHB's five-set rally fell short in a 25-23, 13-25, 26-24, 17-25, 15-11 loss for the Cru. UMHB would grab a 24-21 lead in the third set before the Choctaws won the final five points. The Cru then built an early 19-9 in the fourth set and cruised to a win. After Mississippi College opened the fifth set with a 10-4 run, the Cru would cut it to 13-10 before the Choctaws took two of the final three points to win the match.
Tina Miller was playing an outstanding all around match for the Cru before leaving with an injury in the third set. Miller finished with 13 kills, five service aces and three total blocks.
Kaydie Cochran added 13 kills and 24 digs for UMHB and
Sara Hayward and
Morgan Baker both reached double figures for the Cru with 10 kills apiece.
Erin Maenius had a team-best 32 digs,
Anissa Garcia posted 30 assists and
Alexis Tharp added 24 assists.
Courtney Nordyke topped Mississippi College with 12 kills and Megan Deen added 11 more. Brittany Haglin had 18 digs to lead four Choctaw players in double figures and Deen added 16 digs. Lauryn Hamrick had 37 assists for the Choctaws and Lindsey Scallan chipped in with 12.
The Cru will close out the 2010 season with a 6:00 PM home match against East Texas Baptist University tomorrow at the Mayborn Campus Center. That match will also be the final match in the stellar career of Cru senior libero
