Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team fought back from an early deficit with four straight goals and the Cru held on for a 4-2 victory over Texas Lutheran University Saturday in Belton. The UMHB men improve to 12-3-1 overall and 9-3-1 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The win also clinches a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament for the Cru. The loss ends the Bulldogs season at 7-9-1 overall and 7-5-1 in the ASC on the year.
The Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead when Pedro Martinez scored on a Dillon Darr assist just 9:40 into the match. The Cru tied it when
Logan Nance scored off a
Vincent Morales assist in the 20
th minute.
Ben Allen would miss a penalty kick for the Cru in the 27
th minute, but he knocked home the rebound to give UMHB a 2-1 lead at the 27:36 mark.
Chris Torres would add a goal in the 40
th minute to give the Cru a 3-1 halftime lead.
Bo Baker would add a header off
Daniel Gable's assist in the 51
st minute to stretch the lead to 4-1. TLU then closed to with 4-2 on Morgan Parker's unassisted goal in the 64
th minute, but that's as close as the Bulldogs would get.
Mark Miller finished with six saves in goal for UMHB. Cameron Strealy had two saves for the Bulldogs. TLU outshot the Cru 14-10 and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. The match was a physical one with the two teams combining for 31 fouls and seven yellow cards.
The UMHB men will now advance to the ASC Tournament next weekend in Tyler. This will be the second straight ASC Tournament berth for the Cru and the fourth in
Brad Bankhead's five seasons as head coach. The bracket and pairings for the ASC Tournament should be released on Sunday, October 31
st.
