Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team dominated the first three quarters as the Cru rolled to a 41-31 victory over Mississippi College Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB, ranked fourth in the country by the AFCA, improves to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in American Southwest Conference play on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Choctaws to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the ASC on the year.
UMHB would hit the scoreboard first when
Quincy Daniels dashed 15 yards for a touchdown to cap an eight-play, 76-yard drive with 2:17 left in the first quarter. Daniels would add a two-yard TD run with 14:21 left in the second quarter to give the Cru a 14-0 lead. MC would close to within 14-3 when Dale Wallace hit a 22-yard field goal with 9:49 left in the first half. Daniels would strike again, this time on a 30-yard scamper with 7:45 remaining in the half to give the Cru a 21-3 lead. Daniels also became the UMHB and ASC all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, pushing his career total to 42 and breaking the previous mark of 41 held by UMHB's Jarvis Thrasher.
Darius Wilson would add a 22-yard touchdown run to make it a 28-3 Cru lead. The Choctaws scored their only touchdown of the first half when Tommy Reyer hit Randal Pharr with a 59-yard TD pass with 3:34 left.
Alan Munoz then closed out the first half with a 25-yard field goal and the Cru would lead 31-10 at halftime. Wilson's two-yard TD run on the opening possession of the second half would stretch the Cru lead to 38-10 and effectively put the game out of reach. Reyer would find Demetrius Randolph with a 15-yard TD strike with 1:38 left in the third quarter to close to within 38-17. Munoz then closed out the Cru scoring with a 44-yard field goal with 11:43 left in the game. The Choctaws would score two touchdowns in the final 1:27 of the game to cut the final margin to 10 points, but the game was never really that close.
Daniels finished with 102 rushing yards and three TD's on 17 carries, but he carried just six times in the second half.
LiDarral Bailey ran for 75 yards on 10 carries and added 139 passing yards. Wilson finished with 40 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Cru rolled up 490 yards of total offense, despite only have possession of the ball for 22:25 in the game.
Reyer finished 39-64 passing for 475 yards and he threw three touchdown passes. Pharr caught nine passes for 144 yards and Randolph finished with eight grabs for 106 yards. The Choctaws managed just 24 rushing yards on 35 carries and finished with 499 total yards on 99 total plays. MC held the ball for 37:35 and did not turn the ball over.
Jerrad Jefferson led the Cru defense with 13 tackles and
Chad Cannon added a career-high 12 stops.
Ty Dooley and
Javicz Jones added 11 tackles apiece for UMHB and Jones also broke up four passes. The Cru also had six sacks in the game. Jeremy Bertrand topped the Choctaws with seven total tackles.
UMHB will now hit the road for the final non-conference game of the season. The Cru will travel to Ashland, Oregon to face Southern Oregon University next Saturday. That game will kick off at 3:00 PM Central Time. The Raiders are 2-4 on the season after falling to Central Washington 27-0 on Saturday.
