Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team dominated the game from the opening kickoff and the Cru set a new school scoring record for the second straight week as UMHB rolled to an 81-3 victory over Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The Cru, ranked 4
th in the country, improves to 10-0 overall and 8-0 in American Southwest Conference play. UMHB finishes 10-0 in the regular season for just the second time in the 13-year history of Cru football and UMHB also clinches the outright ASC title with the win. Texas Lutheran finishes the season with a 4-6 overall record and a 3-5 mark in ASC play.
UMHB forced a three-and-out on the game's opening possession and five plays later
Quincy Daniels scored on a one-yard plunge to give the Cru a 7-0 just 3:42 into the game.
LiDarral Bailey added a 15-yard touchdown run and Daniels scored again on a three-yard dash one play after breaking the UMHB and ASC career rushing record to make it 21-0 Cru at the end of the first quarter. Bailey and
Kyle Noack would both throw touchdown passes to
Tariekus Ellis,
Stephen Salinas scored on a three-yard run and Noack hit
Tucker Glaske with a four-yard TD toss to give UMHB a 49-0 lead at halftime.
Alan Munoz would hit a 27-yard field goal, Salinas added a five-yard TD run and
D.J. Monroe scored on a 10-yard run as the Cru stretched the lead to 67-0. Allen Cain hit a 37-yard field with 1:19 left in the third quarter to end the shutout.
Leo Gutierrez and
Bobby Whan would then add fourth-quarter touchdowns run as the Cru broke the school single-game scoring record of 76 points set last week against Sul Ross State.
Daniels finished with 43 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on just nine carries. He broke the ASC and UMHB career rushing record of 3,672 yards previously held by Cru standout Justin Bryson. Daniels now has 3,691 yards rushing in his career. Monroe finished with 122 rushing yards on 16 carries and Gutierrez ran for 119 yards on just eight carries. Bailey was 7-11 passing for 128 yards and a score and Noack was 9-15 for 89 yards and two scores.
Damian Davis caught four passes for 74 yards for the Cru.
Robert Curl led the UMHB defense with nine tackles and
Javicz Jones added seven. The Cru had 27 different players record tackles in the game. PK
Alan Munoz scored 13 points in the game and tied the UMHB and ASC career kick scoring record of 267 held by Zach Newcomb. The 78-point margin of victory is also the largest in Cru football history.
Mitchell Bunger was 13-29 passing for 123 yards for the Bulldogs. Steven Thrash caught seven passes for 63 yards and Bunger was TLU's leading rusher with 10 yards on nine carries. Brandon Thomas led the Bulldogs defense with 15 total tackles and Jack Moses added 13 more.
The Cru offense rolled up 699 yards of total offense on 93 plays. UMHB had 477 rushing yards and 222 more through the air. The Cru did not turn the ball over while forcing three turnovers in the game. Texas Lutheran was held to just 28 rushing yards and 160 yards of total offense by the Cru defense. UMHB played four different quarterbacks in the game and had 10 different players carry the ball and nine different receivers caught passes. Every player who suited out for the Cru played in the game.
UMHB wins at least a share of the ASC title for the sixth straight season and the Cru has now won or shared eight of the last nine league crowns. UMHB will advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships in seven straight seasons and nine of the last ten years. The Cru will find out its First Round opponent and game location when the 32-team field is announced tomorrow. The bracket will be announced between 2:00 and 2:30 PM on ESPNews. Saturday's game was also the 150th in the history of UMHB football and the Cru is 119-31 through those first 150 games.
