Men's soccer to open ASC Tournament play on Friday

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team is gearing up for a second straight trip to the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament and the Cru will advance to the ASC Tournament for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The 2010 ASC Championship Tournament will be played November 5-7 at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler.
UMHB will enter the tournament as the #4 seed after posting a 12-3-1 overall record and going 9-3-1 in ASC play this season. The Cru will open the tourney with an 11:00 AM first-round match against #5 seed Howard Payne (12-4-1, 9-4-0 ASC) on Friday. The Cru topped the Yellow Jackets 4-0 in the regular season meeting between the two teams in Belton back on October 23rd. The winner of the UMHB-Howard Payne match will advance to the semifinals to take on tournament host and top-seeded U.T.-Tyler (10-3-1, 9-2-1) at 11:00 AM on Saturday. U.T.-Dallas (11-4-2, 8-2-2 ASC) and Hardin-Simmons University (11-5-0, 9-4-0 ASC) meet in the other first round game at 2:00 PM Friday with the winner of that match moving on to face #2 seed Mississippi College (12-4-0, 9-3-0 ASC) in a 2:00 PM semifinal on Saturday. The championship match will be at 1:00 PM on Sunday afternoon and the ASC Tournament champion will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Cru posted a 3-2 regular season record against the other teams in the ASC Tournament. UMHB beat Mississippi College 3-0 and topped U.T.-Dallas 1-0 in overtime in addition to the victory over HPU. The Cru dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Hardin-Simmons and fell to U.T.-Tyler 2-1 during the regular season. UMHB is 1-3-1 all-time in the ASC Tournament and will be making its fifth overall appearance.

                The Cru has been led defensively this season by senior goalkeeper Mark Miller. Miller is holding opponents to a 0.71 goals against average and has 80 saves and eight shutouts on the season. Senior forward Bo Baker leads the team in scoring with eight goals and 17 total points and Chris Torres and Trevor Shoppach have six goals apiece this season. Daniel Gable leads the team with seven assists on the year. UMHB has had six different players score game-winning goals this season and two of the Cru's three losses this year came in overtime. UMHB has ten shutouts as a team on the season.
