Tyler, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team could not find the second-half offense to overcome a halftime deficit and the Cru fell to U.T.-Tyler 1-0 in the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Saturday in Tyler. The loss drops the Cru to 13-4-1 overall on the season. The Patriots improve to 11-3-1 on the year and advance to tomorrow's championship match with the victory.
U.T.-Tyler would grab the quick early lead when Noah Shipman scored an unassisted goal just 2:30 into the match. UMHB would have chances to tie the match, but could not find the back of the net as Patriot goalkeeper Mark Oliphant turned aside several good Cru chances.
Mark Miller would also be strong in goal for the Cru, keeping UMHB in the match with several solid saves of his own. The Patriot defense made the difference down the stretch, holding the Cru to just two shots in the final 15 minutes.
Miller finished with three saves in goal for UMHB. Oliphant posted five saves and recorded the shutout for U.T.-Tyler. The Patriots would outshoot 16-15 in the match.
The Cru advanced to the ASC Tournament semifinals for the second straight year. UMHB will now have to hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships when the field is announced on Monday. The Cru men entered the ASC Tournament ranked 2nd in the West Region in the NCAA Regional Rankings.
