Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team used a dominating first-half defensive effort to take control of the game and the Cru rolled to an 83-55 victory over U.T.-Tyler Saturday afternoon in Belton. The UMHB men improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Patriots to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the ASC on the season.
UMHB opened the game with a 25-7 run and held the Patriots to just 27 percent shooting from the field in the opening period. The Cru hit 50 percent from the floor and built a 38-21 halftime lead. U.T.-Tyler fought back to cut the lead to 11 points at 64-53 with 6:06 left to play. But the Cru defense stepped up again and UMHB closed the game with a 19-2 run in the final six minutes to put the game away.
Robert Moore led UMHB with 21 points and
Sterling Phillips added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Greg Wiernas had 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Cru and
James Allen also reached double figures with 10 points. The Cru also shot 52 percent from the field and went 17-21 from the free-throw line. UMHB won the rebounding battle 41-28 and forced 20 turnovers.
Lance Murphy came off the bench to lead the Patriots with 13 points. Larry Carpenter and Michael Johnson scored 11 points apiece and Murphy also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. The Patriots shot 37 percent from the field and went just 4-6 from the free-throw line.
The Cru men will now take 10 days off before returning to action with a pair of ASC road games. UMHB will take on Mississippi College on December 14th before facing Louisiana College on December 16th. The Cru men will then return home to host the Cru Holiday Classic on December 29th and 30th.
