Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team never trailed, built a double-digit second-half lead and then held on for an 81-73 victory over U.T.-Tyler Saturday afternoon in Belton. The UMHB women improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The Cru women also stretched their winning streak to five straight games. The loss drops the Patriots to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the ASC on the season.
UMHB scored the game's first five points and held U.T.-Tyler scoreless for the first 4:33 of the game. The Patriots would fight back to tie the game at 16, but the Cru scored five straight points and would take a 37-33 halftime lead. UMHB would stretch the lead to as many as 13 points in the second half before the Patriots rallied again, cutting it to five with 35 seconds left. But U.T.-Tyler would not score again as the Cru defense came up big to ice the game.
Brittany Zamora led the Cru with 25 points and she also grabbed eight rebounds.
Lindsay Eaton had 24 points and 10 boards for her first double-double of the year.
Caitlin Barganier added 12 points and
Brandy Dittert grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for UMHB. The Cru out rebounded U.T.-Tyler 50-34 and shot 42 percent from the field in the victory.
Lindsey Hausmann led the Patriots with 19 points and Melissa Thomas added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Rashawndria Johnson and Cookie Domino added 10 points apiece for U.T.-Tyler.
The Cru women will return to action with a 3:00 PM non-conference home game against Southwestern University next Saturday. The UMHB women will then hit the road for ASC games at Mississippi College and Louisiana College the following week.
