Kerrville, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team took control of the game early and cruised to a 69-29 victory over Schreiner University Saturday afternoon in Kerrville. The UMHB women clinch at least a share of the American Southwest Conference West Division Championship for the first time in school history with the victory. The Cru women also clinched the West Division's #1 seed in the ASC Championship Tournament with a school-record 15
th consecutive victory. The UMHB women are now 19-4 overall and 16-3 in ASC play following the win. The loss drops the Mountaineers to 1-22 overall and 1-18 in the ASC on the season.
UMHB would open the game with a 14-4 run to take control. Schreiner would close to within 17-1 before the Cru closed the first half with a 20-8 run to take a 37-19 halftime lead. The UMHB defense was dominant in the second half, holding the Mountaineers to just four field goals and 10 total points as the Cru continued to pull away despite playing all 14 playing who suited out for the game at least six minutes apiece.
Kallie White led the Cru with 15 points and Stacie Stephens also reached double figures with 11 points for UMHB. White was 4-7 from the field and Stephens was 3-3 from three-point range. Twelve different players scored for the Cru and six players had five or more points in the victory. Mercedes Corona had eight points to lead Schreiner.
UMHB shot 45 per cent from the field and 47 per cent from three-point range. The Cru defense held Schreiner to 26 per cent shooting from the field, including 18 per cent in the second half. UMHB also forced 18 turnovers and out rebounded the Mountaineers 34-24 in the win.
The Cru women will close out the regular season with a pair of road games next week. The UMHB women will open the week with a 5:30 PM tip-off at Sul Ross State Thursday in Alpine. The Cru women will close out the week with a 1:00 PM start at Howard Payne University next Saturday in Brownwood. The ASC Championship Tournament will be played at the East Division #1 seed February 26-28.
