San Antonio, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team never fully recovered from Trinity's five-run first inning and the Cru dropped a 20-7 decision to the Tigers Tuesday night in San Antonio. The loss drops UMHB to 14-15 on the season. The Tigers improve to 24-7 on the year with the victory.
UMHB grabbed a 1-0 lead on
Josh Fredrick's RBI single in the top of the first inning, but the Tigers answered with five runs in the bottom of the first. Dylan Early's three-run homer was the biggest hit of the inning for Trinity. The Cru would close to within 5-4 with a three-run third inning.
Doak Fleming singled home the first run, the second run scored on an error and
Ricky Brenek pulled UMHB to within a run with an RBI single. The Tigers would add a single run in the fourth before exploding for eight more in the fifth inning. Trinity used seven hits, four walks and a costly Cru error to put together the big inning. The Tigers scored two more in the sixth to make it a 16-4 game before UMHB added a pair in the top of the seventh. One run scored on an error and
Tommy Seigman added an RBI double to cut it to 16-6. Evan Jones blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth for the Tigers to make it 20-7 and
Josh Shaw's RBI single in the top of the ninth provided the final run for the Cru.
Andy Evans took the loss for UMHB to drop to 0-2 on the season. Clint Robertson picked up the win for Trinity to raise his record to 2-1. Brenek, Fredrick, Seigman and
Andrew White had two hits apiece for UMHB. Chris Walden went 4-5 for Trinity and Jones was 3-5 with six RBI in the game.
The Cru will now return home to host Concordia Texas for a crucial, three-game, American Southwest Conference West Division series this weekend. UMHB will host the Tornados for a 2:00 PM single game on Friday before the two teams close out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday. The Cru and Tornados are currently tied with Sul Ross State for fourth place in the ASC West. The top four teams from the West Division will qualify for the ASC Championship Tournament.
